Known for the worst turf in baseball, Veterans Stadium replaced Connie Mack Stadium/ Shibe Park in 1971. In 1961, the Phillies expected to be playing at a new ballpark by 1964, when Connie Mack Stadium was sold to a New York reality. However, 1964 came and went. Disputes over stadium sites brought more delays. In November of 1964, a $25 million bond issue was approved by voters to build a stadium. By 1966, two locations for a new stadium were still being deliberated, while the cost of construction rose to $30 million. On October 2, 1967 ground was broken for a new stadium, in south Philadelphia. The stadium finally opened seven years after the original scheduled opening, on April 10, 1971.

Veterans Stadium, was one of the largest stadiums when it opened, and continues to be today, with 62,382 seats circling the entire playing field. The multipurpose stadium became home to the Phillies and the Eagles (NFL). Very few changes have taken place since Veterans Stadium opened. The scoreboard was originally above the centerfield fence, but was replaced with a two new video boards in the 1990’s, located above the upper deck. The multicolored seats were also replaced with blue seats in 1994, when the Phillies took over the management of the stadium. A replica of the Liberty Bell is located on the stadium roof in center field. For many years, Veterans Stadium was known as one of the worst stadiums in baseball, with its terrible Astroturf. The Eagles football gridiron could even be seen during baseball games. However after the 2000 season, the artificial turf was replaced by Nexturf, a thick plastic grass. The Phillies plan to move into a new ballpark by 2004.
